DSE Assessments

DSE stands for Display Screen Equipment and assessments are required to ascertain the risk of people developing ULD (Upper Limb Disorders) or RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) and identifying measures to prevent them. Some of the symptoms commonly experienced by those suffering from ULD or RSI include:

  • Fatigue
  • Eye strain
  • Upper limb problems
  • Backache.

These symptoms may result in staff absence or illness, resulting in a potential loss to the company.

The type of equipment this relates to includes desktop computers, laptops, touch screens or other similar devices. The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 aim to protect the health of people who work with this type of equipment, and were introduced as DSE has become one of the most common kinds of work equipment.

In order to comply with these regulations as an employer you must:

  • Analyse workstations to assess and reduce risks.
  • Make sure controls are in place.
  • Provide information and training.
  • Provide eye and eyesight tests on request, and special spectacles if needed.
  • Review the assessment when the user or DSE changes.
