Legionella Surveys

There are at least 34 species of legionella which cause Legionnaires’ disease. Legionella is widespread in natural water sources but can also live in man-made water systems such as those found in large premises, including factories or hospitals. The bacteria causes a pneumonia-like illness, which can be particularly dangerous in young children, elderly or unwell people. To prevent contracting Legionnaire’s disease, it is important to ensure that your premises are free of the organism. Under the COSHH regulations 1988, risk assessments are required and, as an employer, you have a responsibility to:

  • Identify and assess risk sources.
  • Prepare a scheme for preventing or controlling the risk.
  • Implement and manage precautions.
  • Keep records of precautions implemented.
